I think I got it with this one –mostly—what I have been trying to say since I was a little kid: Please stop hurting our animal family! I’m not talking about everyone becoming vegan, like Clarice in the book. I’m talking about being compassionate and respectful toward animals. Including reptiles and amphibians.
This is my first work of fiction. I struggled with it for five years! It is awkward, like Grace, the girl in the book. But that’s okay, because it is still a great story and all I have to do is write more books!
If you want to know where I got my lizard love, read the Prologue. It is totally autobiographical.
THE SUNDOWN RULE
I wrote and revised this book in eighteen months. I had a perfect writing schedule –full time! Plus, I’d learned a few things from writing LIZARD LOVE. SUNDOWN got some good reviews and came close to a Green Earth Book Award, which made me very proud. Some readers say it is too quiet a story. I like that actually –I’m a big believer in quiet. Being quiet is how you hear lizards, and other animals, and your own deepest dreams and desires.
